GETTING TO THE SOURCE

Back Pain Isn’t Always Simple

Back injuries can come from lifting, a fall, an accident, or wear over time — and the source matters for how it’s treated. A muscle strain, a joint issue, and a disc-related problem like a herniated disc can all cause similar-feeling pain.

We start with a hands-on exam to understand what’s actually going on before recommending care.

Sorting Out What’s Actually Going On

A muscle or ligament strain, irritation in one of the small facet joints along the spine, sacroiliac (SI) joint pain in the lower back and hip, and a disc-related issue like a herniated disc or sciatica can all produce back pain that feels fairly similar day to day. Where it hurts, what makes it better or worse, and how it responds to certain movements during your exam all help point to which one applies to you.

A few symptoms are worth mentioning right away rather than waiting for your appointment — fever, unexplained weight loss, or any change in bowel or bladder function alongside back pain. Those aren’t typical mechanical back pain symptoms, and we’ll direct you toward immediate medical evaluation if you have them. For more typical mechanical back pain, care usually starts with reducing pain and protecting the area, then rebuilding strength and movement as you improve.
