SYMPTOMS & CAUSES

What Whiplash Feels Like

Whiplash happens when the neck is forced to move suddenly, most often in a rear-end collision. Symptoms don’t always appear right away — some people notice stiffness or pain a day or more after the accident.

An evaluation soon after an accident gives us a baseline, even if symptoms are mild at first.

How Whiplash Happens

In a rear-end or other collision, your torso is pushed forward by the seat while your head briefly lags behind, then snaps forward — a rapid back-and-forth motion that stresses the neck’s muscles, ligaments, and joints well beyond their normal range. This can happen at surprisingly low speeds, since it’s the sudden change in motion that causes strain, not necessarily the amount of vehicle damage.

Whiplash-related injuries range from mild muscle strain to more involved ligament and joint irritation, which is part of why symptoms and recovery time vary so much from person to person. It’s also common for whiplash to involve more than just the neck — the shoulders, upper back, and jaw can all be affected by the same forces, so we check beyond just where it hurts most.

Treatment typically starts with reducing pain and inflammation and encouraging gentle movement, then shifts toward restoring full range of motion and normal function as you improve. We reassess at each visit and document your progress throughout — useful for your own recovery and for any insurance or personal injury claim tied to the accident.
